Learning online
Learners may substantially enhance their learning experience if it is supported by the online environment, while the training organisation can save time and resources by blending online and offline training delivery.
Self managed process
A Online Learning Centre (OLC) means resources are available 24x7, so the learning experience matches the person's lifestyle. The online calendar also enables the learner to organise their own learning schedule and keep track of key milestones.
Connected to facilitator
The learner can ‘imessage' or email the facilitator at any time and expect an answer within an agreed timeframe. A record of the communication is kept in the OLC permanently. The facilitator can be automatically notified when a learner has sent them an imessage.
Resources
A range of resources can be made available, so that learners can make print documents, audio files and PowerPoint presentations associated with a unit of work. Training organisations find they save significantly by putting copies of learning material online for learners to download as they need them.
Online research assistance
A set of external links relevant to the specific subject can be created and this directed use of internet based resources assists the learner to make best use of their time.
Maintain a journal
The online journal can be used to make notes in the same way they would use a notepad and is a good mechanism for recording reflective thoughts. The facilitator has access to the journal, so it can also be used as a mentoring tool.
Collaborative discussion
Facilitators or managers can put up topics on the discussion board and learners are able to add comments, respond and generally participate in a debate or discussion on a topic at any time, as this facility is always available.
Communicate with others
Valuable learning occurs informally when learners in a group communicate with each other. ‘Imessage' is an internal mailing facility built into the OLC to assist this process.
Online learning material
Online courseware created specifically around the unit subject, and containing a variety of learning interactions, may also be accessible from the Unit menu.
