Workplace learner
Within the context of VET, workplace learning is structured on-the-job training that leads to a nationally recognised qualification or Statement of Attainment.
Element 2.3 Intent (P24) mentions ‘’Learners, including trainees and apprentices, receive…’. It is worded this way to ensure all learners receive support. Previously, some RTOs would ensure workplace support for learners on traineeships because this was a contractual responsibility but not give it too much priority to it if it was fee-for-service training . Basically, support must be available to all learners in a workplace doing nationally recognised training.
As an absolute minimum, support from the employer should comes in the form of:
- The facilities and equipment for the person to do the job they have been employed to do
- A supervisor who helps them learn what they need to know to operate effectively. It is also about the ratio of workplace learners to supervisors. If there are too many learners to one supervisor then it is difficult to see how there can be effective workplace support. The RTO should check this.
- Time-off to go to any off-the-job training that has been agreed.
